Whalers Peninsula Community Association is sending a ‘desperate’ call-out to the community for non-perishable food items after recent high-demand depleted its pantry.
Goolwa’s not-for profit charity supports vulnerable local residents, including through a pantry, The Whalers Emporium op-shop and social housing.
Manager Mary McInnes said this can be the worst time of the year for some, triggering money issues over the holiday season and heading into the school term.
“Christmas causes a lot of friction for people (surrounding) money,” Ms McInnes said.
“This time of year, school’s gone back… and by the time they buy uniforms and everything – we’re topping them up.
“In February, we get people who have just had to buy books or uniforms… and electricity bills are out and a lot of people are coming in looking for support and help with food.”
Ms McInnes has seen how financial struggles over the holiday season can trigger domestic violence cases.
A few recent cases had survivors leaving with just what they could carry, and securing housing which was furnished by Whalers.
As well as domestic violence victims, others seeking help come from widespread circumstances, such as those who may just find themselves financially-short once or twice a year.
Another recent Whalers case involved grandparents who had just been given custody of their grandchildren due to drug-addicted parents.
“There are a lot of sad stories out there – it’s just a matter of us figuring out how we can help them,” Ms McInnes said.
Food hampers are handed out throughout the year, with almost 2200 people receiving one in 2022, including 48 people “over the moon” to receive recent Christmas hampers with a leg of ham.
Heading into 2023, Ms McInnes believes the cost-of-living and demand for support is only growing, and is calling for donations to prepare ahead, while thanking local residents and community groups who have given ongoing generosity and support.
“The service clubs are absolutely fantastic – Rotary and Cittaslow are just brilliant,” Ms McInnes said.
“The community is fantastic here – they always have been.”
Donations of non-perishable foods, clothing, bric-a-brac, furniture and bedding are welcomed.
More volunteers are also needed to help in the Emporium.
