Riding into the new year in style

1 min read

About 2000 people browsed an impressive collection of classic vehicles in Strathalbyn on Sunday morning.

Strathalbyn Auto Collectors Club’s Coffee and Chrome event saw about 52 cars, six motorbikes and one boat, the pride-and-joys of local owners, at the bottom of Colman Terrace.

President Kate Knight said many members from surrounding clubs, such as Victor Harbor, Murray Bridge and Mount Barker attended the event and some joined their Strathalbyn counterpart.

“They said ‘it’s a good club to be in and you do a lot of social activities and do a lot of events’ and that’s what they like,” she said.

Club members participate in Coffee and Chrome events, meetings, and community events and runs monthly.

Leaving from Strathalbyn, a run typically involves stopping at a nearby bakery for morning tea before heading to an afternoon activity.

“Our club is all about the gathering and friendship,” Ms Knight said.

“Some of the older ones, we’ve found, don’t have families, and the car club is their family.

“I was surprised at the number of older ones who came (Sunday) because I thought it would be too hot, but they came and they enjoyed – it’s really lovely.

“All the members of our club are really beautiful people and they just want to be part of the club and it’s just brilliant.”

Over the past nine years, the club has grown its membership from eight to 400.

Members include those who have inherited vehicles, collectors, and restorers, all who enjoy the social aspect and trading parts.

Cars 25 years or older are welcome to join.

“I love seeing all the different (vehicles) comes in,” Ms Knight said.

“If anybody wants to come and join, they don’t have to have a classic car.

“If people want to come and be part of the social scene of it, they are welcome.

“It’s more about the social activity for us”.
