Last year’s momentous Strathalbyn Show returned afer a two-year hiatus by celebrating its milestone 150th event, attracting the biggest crowd in memory, 9000 visitors, and earning the Alexandrina Council award of Strathalbyn’s Community Event of the Year.
Afterwards, some of the people behind the scenes decided to hang up their hats and retire on a high, leaving positions vacant and the opportunity for residents to join one of Strathalbyn’s biggest and much-loved events.
Residents may fill a variety of roles for the upcoming October long-weekend show, including convenors for arts and crafts, needlework and fruit and vegetables.
Two committee member positions are available, and volunteers are needed to help set up, pack up, or help on the day.
Extra people are also needed at a volunteers’ tent, which will offer catering to helpers.
Secretary Deb Petersen grew up in Kangarilla, lived in Melbourne for a long time and after moving back into the region, decided to join the Strathalbyn Agricultural Society committee to re-engage with the community.
“I walked around and got stopped every two seconds: ‘where are the ATMs?’, ‘where are the toilets?’, ‘where can I find this?’, and I just loved that because I got to meet so many people… I met some gorgeous people,” she said.
“To see the community come in that day – everybody was so happy and it was just a joyous day – I think that was really rewarding, we loved it.
“It was fantastic – it was so full and it was buzzing.”
The Strathalbyn Agricultural Society members for 2023 are: long-serving President Rex Liebelt, Vice-President Trudy Hull, Junior Vice-President Edward Vardon, Treasurer Ben Jackson, Secretary Deb Petersen, Cookery Convenor and Public Officer Vaughan Wilson and committee member Craig Huckstepp.
