layers to join its new season and help celebrate a milestone 150 years.
President, Mark Thomas, invites anyone to join the club, no matter of what skillset, as enjoyment comes “first and foremost”, in a “real country atmosphere”.
“Obviously, we want to be competitive, but we want everyone to enjoy their cricket and that’s important, because that’s what makes us different to other clubs,” he said.
“We’re more about… having fun and enjoying each other’s company.
“It’s great to win, obviously, but it’s more about relaxing, getting away from everything… and having a chill time playing with your mates.
“We’re a cricket club who just enjoy the basics of life; a drink with your mates after a game of cricket.
“That’s what I’d like to see them do this year, and that way you can attract other people.”
Even the most novice of players will be welcomed, who will be coached and encouraged.
“The focus isn’t on your ability, we won’t stop someone coming out who isn’t good enough,” Mark said.
“We’d rather see someone who’s going to come out and play the game and have fun and just enjoy it for what it is.”
Mark’s son, Vice-President Jared Thomas, said many are attracted to the club’s family-friendly environment, and the “characters” and “larkiness” of other players.
“We don’t care where you’ve come from or what your history is,” Jared said.
“We’ve had people who’ve never picked up a cricket bat or a cricket ball and they’re playing almost up to life membership.”
Finniss Cricket Club had a new logo designed to celebrate its 150th year, and will hold an event in January.
Finniss was formerly known as “Queen’s Own Town”, so the cricket club was originally called “Queen’s Own Town Cricket Club”, when it began on September 13, 1872, before the town name was changed to Finniss in 1940.
The new logo recognises the original name of the club, the indigenous heritage of the area, the club’s frill-neck lizard moniker mascot and the Finniss Oval’s picket fence, made by members.
Finniss Cricket Club’s former members and supporters are encouraged to get involved with the club or social events this season to celebrate, with the main event held at Finniss Oval on January 21, 2023, which will include a game against Langhorne Creek.
New players are welcome at any point of the season, as Mark said: “We’re very flexible”.
To get involved, attend training on Wednesday nights from 5pm, which typically involves a sausage sizzle or drink afterwards, email: (finnisscricketclub@gmail.com), or contact the team via Finniss Cricket Club’s Facebook page.
