Soccer clubs come together in spirit of mateship

Strathalbyn Strikers played host to Unley Old Scholars FC on Saturday, with the two teams coming together in memory of Emlyn Lewis who played for both Strathalbyn and Unley during his football career before he lost his brief fight with cancer in 2021.
Emlyn was well-known for his kind nature and good humour so, rather than silence, the two teams came together for a minute's applause, followed by a game of “Rock Paper Scissors” to decide the kick off.
The Unley side came out of the blocks early, making a number of challenging runs forward but the Strathalbyn side held firm, and in turn created a number of counter-attacking chances.

Unfortunately for the hosts, Unley broke through their defensive line and scored in the 25th minute which opened up the flood gates.
Despite the emotional atmosphere, both teams took to the field with determination and grit.

The Strathalbyn Strikers put up a valiant effort, but they were no match for the skill and experience of Unley Old Scholars.

The visitors ultimately dominated the game from start to finish, with their attacking prowess on full display.

In the end, the Unley Old Scholars were victorious by a margin of seven goals to nil.

The game was a great showcase of football skill and sportsmanship, with both teams playing hard but fair.

Despite the score line, the Strathalbyn Strikers can take heart in the fact that they gave it their all, and they will undoubtedly come back stronger in future matches.
After the game, both teams came together to pay tribute to Emlyn and to raise funds for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation with more than $550 raised, along with a number of private donations given to the cause.

The teams were honoured to have many of Emlyn’s family and friends present for the game including his son Harry who, by all reports, is taking after his father with his interest in football.
